Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to analyze the narratives in connection with covenant, healing, naming, and the hagiography of Abune Tekle Hayemanot himself. The data were basically collected through in-depth interviews and observation. The data were analyzed using hermeneutically interpretation and inter-textual analysis based on theories of functionalism and narratology. The study has identified that a number of patients were healed through various spiritual practices: such as drinking holy water and nifrowuha, lapping one’s body with the cross, steaming with the smoke of the kitchen of Debre Libanos, and caring the book of hagiography of Abune Teklehaymanot. The paper has shown that numerous healings were done which might not be justified by the worldly reality. Naming in this study was given due attention to its denotative and connotative interpretation. The origins and symbolic representations of some basic names were narrated and analyzed. To this end, the narratives in relation to the covenant, healing, naming, and the hagiography of St. Teklehaymanot were identified as a significant instrument to teaching, maintaining and transferring the religious ideology and spiritual identity of the monastery to the next generation.
