Abstract

 

It is believed that the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church is the prime abode and source of Ethiopian history. In this respect, the Ecclesiastical objects which have been used in the church are good indicators of the diversified heritage it has. Before the establishment of museums in Ethiopia, the Church has been giving the service in various ways. This emanates from the long history and rich heritage that the church possesses. Than ever before, the Church is now paying due attention to the wellbeing of its heritage and started to establish museums in various parishes churches, and monasteries. However, this practice of museum establishment has its own challenges and prospectus. To this end, this paper is targeted to assesses the existing situation in these church and monastery museums, identify the challenges and prospectus and in turn specify the better ways forward. The study is conducted by taking four church museums
as samples and using observation, interview, a document study, and related techniques as data collection tools. The collected data of different types are sorted and analyzed using the descriptive analysis technique. Accordingly, appreciating the growing process of museum establishment in various churches and monasteries, the study indicates the need for regulation which will enable the church to conserve, research, and promote its heritage better. In the meantime, the establishment of museums should be in line with the existing realities of the church or monastery concerned. This will make the church economically benefited apart from elongating the survival of its heritage.
